Thinking of warm-weather training?

Just as the snow has arrived by the ton, I have received an email advertising an English-run chalet near Malaga: http://www.idlebreaks.com/

Survived

posted 15 Dec 2010, 14:57 by Secretary WWCC   [ updated 14 Apr 2011, 02:50 by Admin WWCC ]

Hon Sec Peter Rogers returned today (Weds 15 Dec 2010) to the site of the battle he had with the concrete apron at Newport Velodrome, the battle he lost in dramatic style. This time there were no mishaps and he survived, soon getting into the swing of things and joining in the group exercises (when the pace wasn't too hot). If he can do this on the first ride after the prang, anyone can. So - any members interested in a session over there from complete novices upwards?

For general information, the following rides are known about and AFAIK all are open to any rider.

Monday    18:00    Cheddar Cycle Store    steady
Wednesday 08:20    Priory School, Worle   not WW
Wednesday 13:30    Cheddar Cycle Store    pressing on
Thursday  varies   easy pace - contact thursday-runs@weston-wheelers.co.uk for details each week
Friday    18:00    Cheddar Cycle Store    chain-gang (bit-and-bit)
Saturday  08:20    Priory School, Worle   not WW. Brisk?
Sunday    09:00    The Cutting            A-run 70-80 miles non-stop brisk (check with Cheddar Cycle Store)

The Cutting is the loop on the A370 south of Weston General Hospital and south of the turn to Bleadon Hill, just before the railway bridge.
Looking to get a B-run going on Sunday, too, anyone happy to lead it? Aims not so lofty as A-run, back in time for lunch. Cafe stop included?

Website update (and migration of old site)

posted 29 Sep 2010, 04:26 by Admin WWCC   [ updated 14 Apr 2011, 02:48 ]

As members will be aware (from the email I sent) the hosting fees that we pay for the old website were due to be increased by a substantial amount in November.

To avoid paying these fees I've spent the best part of 3 days migrating the old site to the new. This was no easy task; the image folder alone (on the old site) contained 21,623 items (1.36 GB of data) which I had to download to a Macbook with Windows installed before transfer to my iMac. The images were then imported into iPhoto and exported to Picasa. This resulted in a warning email from BT Broadband re my monthly usage allowance!

Anyway it's done. If you visit the photo gallery you'll find it's really easy to view the archived picture material - instead of clicking through various folders you just have to click slideshow and sit back and enjoy the show. To see results from past years, go to Archives (pre 2010) where you'll find PDF files containing copies of pages from the old site.

I've also updated the site and deleted old material - if anyone has a problem with anything (broken links etc.) please let me know so that I can correct it.

For Sale & Wanted

Members .. have you got a load of old bike bits (or a bike) that you want to get rid of (I know I have, when I get the time to sort them out!). Or, perhaps you're looking for some bits that another member may have lying around but doesn't want.

We did have a For Sale/Wanted section on the forum but I've now promoted it to the main part of the site where more people are likely to see it! .. learn more >.

A challenge from abroad

posted 15 Jul 2010, 09:10 by Secretary WWCC   [ updated 14 Apr 2011, 02:47 by Admin WWCC ]

An old friend of mine (and even a friend of long standing) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada co-ordinates the so-called World Masters TT Challenge. Basically clubs from places as far-flung as Queensland, Australia race against each other on VTTA Age Standard in teams of 5 but it's not a 5-up TTT.

He has asked if the Wheelers would care to participate next year. Apart from the fact that this year the Wheelers have so far failed to put more than a couple of riders in any open 10 and very few if any in an open 25, I think we should take the bait...

Your thoughts, gentlemen (and ladies)?

Changes to the website (and goodbye forum)

posted 9 Jul 2010, 07:20 by Unknown user   [ updated 14 Apr 2011, 02:47 by Admin WWCC ]

Please note: this article has been amended - please see end of post

I monitor visitor patterns using Google analytics so I have a very good idea of which parts of the website are popular (and which aren't). So, I've revised the layout and the navigation menu to make it easier for visitors to find popular content (the not so popular pages are now under more links ..in the menu).

Here's a statistics summary for the last week ..

What is noticeable is that the forum no longer enjoys it's past popularity.

Here's the stats:
  • There were just 15 forum page views (out of the 412)
  • There are only 6 members and (other than me) only 1 of those visited in 7 days
  • There have been no posts since 26th June!
In April I submitted a post on the forum titled "Do we still need the forum ..? Not one single member has responded which may suggest the answer is "no".

Am I disappointed? Actually, I'm not, as my view is that we should scrap it anyway! I don't like the concept of having duplicated content on the News page and the forum and I don't like the inconvenience of having to check in two places to find out what's happening in the club! Also, of course, I don't want the extra work that the forum entails, if there's only a few people using it.

Amendment: the original post referred to a facility that would allow members to post items for inclusion on the home page via a link. After further discussion it was agreed that (for a number of reasons) this would not be practical.

If any member has content for the site please email admin. Similarly, if you have a view on the closure of the forum please email us at the same address.

How fast should I be going (at my age)?

New riders may appreciate a realistic, age related, target to aim for and the VTTA (Veterans Time Trial Association) standards table may be a good starting point.

I've added more information on the Sundries page .. view >
