Club Rides 2012

posted 29 Jan 2012 08:30 by Admin WWCC   [ updated 18 Feb 2012 04:57 ]

[UPDATE .. We have now received confirmation of our affiliation to CTC so we're "good to go". All we need now is a few people to lead some rides and we can get some entries on the calendar (which looks decidedly blank at the moment!]

The time is approaching when we should consider a club ride programme for 2012. This assumes there will be enough support for club rides and I hope very much that there will be (as the club is investing in CTC membership).

One of the perceived problems is that club members are very much "mixed ability" but this can be overcome with a little ingenuity. For example, if there is going to be a cafe stop, the slower group could start earlier (or the faster group could do a longer route) so that everyone would arrive at the break, at the same time. This of course assumes that members want to incorporate a social aspect into rides.

A possible advantage to a club ride programme is that we may attract new members. If an existing member brings along a non-club member (which is permitted by CTC subject to a few limitations), and the non-member enjoys riding with us, he/she may join the club!

I'm going to duplicate this post on the Facebook group but I'll add questions to establish which day and what pace is preferred plus it will give members a chance to comment and/or put forward ideas of their own.

Please take the trouble to contribute otherwise the programme may never get off the ground.

If you're already in the Facebook group, please click here to visit - if you're not, find more info here.

Fenny Castle Tea Rooms

Please see below the transcript of an email that we've received and which will be of interest to those members (including me) who visit the tearooms!

"Dear Sirs,

I am emailing you from Fenny Castle Tea Rooms on the Somerset levels at www.fennycastle.co.uk. Many of the local cycling clubs have been visiting us for their cake stops and lunches and we would love to see your club. The reason for this email is to inform you that we have now closed for the winter months and will reopen on the Sunday the 2nd of April 2012. This is different to our website which will soon be updated. If you do decide to visit us during the summer months we believe you will be pleasantly surprised as we have a large café serving a great choice of breakfasts, lunches, homemade cakes and real coffee etc. We also have a great garden with plenty of space for all your bikes.

Best wishes and looking forward to seeing you in April,

Esme Martin"

It's not "Goodbye Peter" but "Thanks" ..

The more observant amongst you may have noticed (in "Buy and Sell") that Peter Rogers is selling his club kit!

However Peter has renewed his subscription to WW but as a second-claim member. After much deliberation he has decided to move on (but retain links with WW) and he will be riding as a member of Team Tor in 2012.

Peter took on the secretary role at a time when no one else was prepared to do it and during his term put in an immense amount of work for the club that included the running of some very successful open events.

I'm sure that all members will join me in wishing Peter very best wishes for the future and thanking him for all his hard work in the past.

At least, we won't lose touch.

Mystery rider! [update added: 1st Jan 2012]

posted 31 Dec 2011 05:59 by Admin WWCC   [ updated 1 Jan 2012 04:55 ]

Please see the update 1st Jan 2012 (at the end of the post).

You may recall a previous post titled Action from 1967! which included an old photo (copied below).

The second rider was identified as Paul Baker but I've now received an email from ex member John Griffiths:

I'm a former Weston Wheeler, having ridden for the club from 1974 - 1982, and then again from 1991 - 1995.

I believe the Weston Wheeler in the above photo is actually Jim Parkman, and not Paul Baker.

Jim rode for the club at that time, and was know to many as the manager of the Les Wilkins Cycle Shop in Bridgwater in the 70's and 80's and then the Weston shop in the 90's.

Thanks John - all we need now is a *response from Paul! .. (*see below)

Update: 1st Jan 2012

Paul has confirmed that the second rider in the photo is Jim Parkman, who sadly passed away on the 20th november, 2011 age 63. Jim was a member of Weston Wheelers during the 60's and 70's.

CTC

In 2012, it is the intention to affiliate WWCC to the CTC.

Affiliating to CTC provides important benefits for the club:
  • Comprehensive Organisers' Liability insurance
  • Special rates on full individual CTC membership
  • Special affiliated CTC membership to pass on to members
A copy of the club affiliation form is attached below as it contains more info on the benefits of individual CTC options which are available (at extra cost and on application) if you're a WWCC member.

More about CTC here: http://www.ctc.org.uk/

To take up an individual CTC option you need to apply and pay via WWCC so please contact admin prior to paying your membership so that it can be incorporated in one payment.

Personal insurance

posted 30 Dec 2011 10:50 by Admin WWCC   [ updated 30 Dec 2011 10:50 ]

There has been recent media coverage on the question of insurance for cyclists - please see this link for an example. It's well worth reading as it may raise a few issues that you haven't thought of!

The club regards it as essential that everyone takes out adequate insurance cover on a personal basis.

Personal cover is available from either BC or *CTC (*see section above) but you must apply for it as an individual.

It's very important to differentiate between the cover provided to the club (as a result of it's affiliation to various bodies) and your own personal insurance needs.
